The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will refund more than $5.6 million to Ring customers after a 2023 privacy settlement.
Last year the FTC filed a complaint against Ring, the Amazon-owned home security company, after allegations surfaced that employees were spying on customers in their bedrooms and bathrooms. Not only that, but until 2018 the company failed to notify and obtain customer consent regarding the use of security video footage for training purposes.
The FTC said Ring failed to restrict access to its videos, failed to obtain user consent and failed to implement security measures that led to “serious violations of user privacy.”
THE The FTC will issue refunds through 117,044 PayPal payments to customers, depending on the type of Ring device used during the period in which unauthorized users could have accessed Ring video footage.
