Akamai announces Content Protector to stop scraping attacks

PRESS RELEASE

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MY BROTHER), the cloud company that powers and protects life online, today announced the availability of Content protectora product that stops scraping attacks without blocking the useful traffic that companies need to improve their business.

Scraper robots are a critical and often productive part of the commercial ecosystem. These bots search for new content, highlight products on comparison sites, and gather up-to-date product information to share with customers. Unfortunately, scrapers are also used for malicious purposes such as competitive undercutting, surveillance before inventory hoarding attacks, and counterfeiting of goods and websites. Scraperers also ping sites 24/7 , unless they are stopped, then they can degrade site performance, which in turn frustrates consumers and causes them to abandon their visits. Additionally, in recent years, scrapers have become much more evasive and sophisticated.

Akamai Content Protector helps detect and mitigate evasive scrapers who steal content for malicious purposes. It enables better site performance, improved user experience, and intellectual property protection, while facilitating significantly better detections and fewer false negatives without increasing the false positive rate. The product is designed for businesses that need to protect their reputation and earning potential. It offers customized detections that include:

  • Protocol level evaluation: Protocol fingerprinting checks how visitors connect to your site to ensure they are legitimate. Evaluate how the client establishes the connection with the server at different levels of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, verifying that the negotiated parameters are aligned with those expected by the most common web browsers and mobile applications.

  • Application level evaluation: Consider whether the client can execute some business logic written in JavaScript. When the client runs JavaScript, it collects device and browser characteristics and user preferences. These various data points are compared and cross-checked with protocol-level data for consistency.

  • User Interaction: Analyze user interactions to distinguish between human and bot traffic. Evaluate how users interact with devices such as touch screens, keyboards and mice, identifying bots through their lack of interaction or anomalous usage patterns.

  • User behavior: Monitor visitor behavior on your website to identify unusual patterns indicative of bots.

  • Risk classification: It provides a deterministic and actionable classification of traffic as low, medium or high risk, based on the anomalies detected during the assessment.

“Content Protector is more than just a security tool; it’s a business enabler,” says Rupesh Chokshi, SVP and GM, Application Security at Akamai. “By protecting your digital assets from threats, it prevents competitors from undermining your offerings, improves site performance to keep customers engaged, and protects your brand from counterfeiters. Content Protector provides direct business value to grow your digital business in completely safe.”
