Viral TikTok denounces the increase in prices of IKEA mattresses and inflation

A TikTok highlighting price hikes at IKEA is going viral after a creator had an eye-opening online shopping experience at the furniture retailer.

A video from a TikToker named Jules has racked up over 1.3 million views after she showed viewers what happened when she went to reorder a mattress she first purchased in 2021 to get the same one for her kids.

The buyer said that, in 2021, the mattress cost $170, and when she went to check last month, she was shocked by how much the price had increased in just three years.

“Now the same mattress costs $249, that’s $70 more or 40% more than in November 2021,” he explained. “This is just another example of why it is so expensive to be an adult in 2024.”

Viewers were outraged by the massive price increase in 26 months, with many accusing the retailer of raising prices at the expense of the customer to keep up with the competition.

“People need to stop talking about inflation and start calling it corporate greed,” one viewer wrote. “It’s a prospect that needs to be addressed.”

“When you go through the same thing, inflation is CRAZY,” said another.

Currently, the price of mattresses on IKEA’s website ranges from $99 to $1,049.

In November 2023, IKEA launched a “New Lower Price” initiative in which the retailer added red banners to certain products online with the higher original price listed under the new lower price.

The decision came after IKEA was found to have raised prices by up to 80% more than in 2021.

“The price drop isn’t just a promotion, it’s our promise to our customers,” said Javier Quiñones, CEO and chief sustainability officer of IKEA US, in a statement released at the time. “Our priority is to remain as affordable as possible and continue to reduce prices whenever we can to ensure our products are accessible to all and dream homes are within the reach of many.”

IKEA did not immediately respond Entrepreneurrequest for comment.
